A lot of backyards in NEPA start out looking exactly like this - stumps poking up through the ground, rough uneven terrain, and nowhere for water to go. When roof runoff has no real outlet, it just sits. That standing water causes erosion, soft spots, and over time it can work its way toward your foundation. It's one of those problems people put off until it gets worse.

Here's what we were working with on this one. The backyard had old stumps that needed to come out completely, root systems and all. We brought our Bobcat excavator in and pulled them out at the roots - none of that half-measure stuff. Once the stumps and debris were cleared out, we had a solid starting point for everything else.

From there, we brought in fill dirt and graded the entire area out. Good grading isn't just about making something look flat - it's about making sure water moves away from where it shouldn't be. We also installed drainage pipe to handle the roof runoff specifically, so when it rains heavy, the water has somewhere to go and isn't pooling up against the house or soaking into the yard.

The finished grade is clean, tight fence line to fence line, and the space is actually usable now. What was a stump-covered mess is now a solid, level yard that's ready for whatever Nick wants to do with it next - lawn, patio, play area, you name it. That's what good site prep does.
